Was it a smart move for the Jews to come up with a new version of Judaism which was palatable for gentiles?

Will it end up working for them, or biting them in the backside. So far we have seen it bite them repeatedly in the backside (Christian persecution of the Jews). But maybe we will see it finally pay off for them. What do you think?
