Why do some people paste answers, and is it a violation?

Yes it is. If you see your answer copied and pasted by someone else who submitted it as their own, then you should report them for cheating. This has happened to me once recently and had to report another user for doing just that. This is a form of cheating DEFINITELY frowned upon by the Y!A Team. I hope this should answer your question.
