Why does the microscope show inverted images?

In cl, we were doing an activity to better understand microscopes. We cut out an "e" and placed it on the microscope. The "e" was facing me when I looked at it with my eye. However, when I looked at it through the eyepiece, the image was upside down...why does that happen?
